If you’ve ever thought, “I’m saying the right thing… so why isn’t it landing?” you’re not alone. This is one of the most common workplace communication problems for high-performing leaders, and it’s exactly why Decode the Blueprint has become one of my most requested keynotes.
Why Communication Styles Matter More Than Ever
AI is going to replace a lot of tasks. A lot of busy work. A lot of mundane stuff. But AI can’t replace the moment when two humans need to truly understand each other. That moment is still on us, which means your ability to translate your message is now a leadership advantage.
A Barcelona Lesson in “Same Intent, Different Language”
My family loves to travel, and last year we were in Barcelona. Between Spanish, Catalan, and English, you never knew what language a conversation would start with. My son tried to “Spanish-ify” words by adding an ‘A’ at the end (creative, but not always accurate). My husband tried talking louder (bless him). And I ordered what I thought were stuffed mushrooms… and received anchovies instead. Same intent. Different language. Different result.
That’s funny on vacation. But at work? That’s Tuesday.
Decode the Blueprint: The 4 Codebreaker BANK Communication Styles
Blueprint
Blueprints value structure, timelines, precision, and preparation. If they ask, “What’s the plan?” or “What’s the timeline?” they’re telling you what they need to trust the conversation. Lead with the agenda, the process, and the next steps.
Action
Actions value speed, results, and decisions. If they ask, “What do you need from me?” they want the ask, the deadline, and the next move. Keep it tight. Think bullet points, not a novel.
Nurturer
Nurturers value connection, teamwork, and how things feel for people. If they lead with, “How are you?” and they mean it, they’re building trust through relationship. Give them a moment of connection before you jump into the agenda.
Knowledge
Knowledge codes value information, logic, and credibility. If they ask for data, comparisons, or time to think, they’re not being difficult, they’re being thorough. Lead with the why and the evidence before you ask for movement.
The Secret to Being Heard
People don’t resist your message, they resist the way it’s delivered. When you communicate in someone else’s language, you build trust faster and reduce resistance.
Try This Today (One Small Pivot)
Pick one person you struggle to communicate with. Ask yourself what they seem to value most: structure, speed, connection, or information. Then adjust ONE thing in your next conversation. That single pivot can change the entire dynamic.
