Discovering Your Core Values: The First Step to Authentic Leadership

Share:

Have you ever felt like you were living a version of success that wasn’t really yours?

Maybe everything looks great from the outside – a good job, a supportive family, a full calendar – but inside, you’re tired. Disconnected. Drifting.

If that hits a little too close to home, you’re not alone. In fact, you might be missing the very first (and most important) step toward leading with authenticity: identifying your core values.

I know because I’ve been there.

For years, I followed the “safe” path. Earned a business degree, climbed the corporate ladder, and eventually became a Senior Vice President at a Fortune 100 company. I had the career, the family, the memories. But something was still missing. And I couldn’t figure out why.

Until I realized that I was living my life on autopilot, chasing what I thought I should want instead of aligning with what I truly value.

What are Core Values, and why do they matter?

Your core values are the beliefs that anchor you. They guide your decisions, your relationships, your energy. And when those values are ignored or misaligned with your work or environment? You start to feel drained, frustrated, even burned out.

Values misalignment often masquerades as other problems:

  • Exhaustion despite getting enough rest
  • Apathy toward things that once excited you
  • Constant stress with no clear cause
  • That persistent “off” feeling, even when life seems good

Sound familiar?

How to reconnect with your core values

The good news is: awareness is the first spark of change. When you take the time to define your values, not just list them, you begin to see where you’re out of alignment and where you need to shift.

Here’s how to start:

  1. Download the Core Values Worksheet (linked below)
  2. Read the list of values and check any that resonate
  3. Narrow it down to your top 10
  4. Then define your top 5 in your own words

The clarity you gain from this process is priceless.

Why definitions matter!

Words like “family,” “respect,” or “freedom” mean different things to different people. I learned this firsthand when I led my team through the values exercise three people listed “respect” as a top value, but each had a completely different definition.

Without defining your values, you risk assuming others interpret them the same way, which can lead to miscommunication, unmet expectations, and unnecessary tension..

🌀 Living Aligned

When your life aligns with your core values, things start to shift:

  • You gain energy and clarity
  • You create true work-life alignment (not just balance)
  • You lead more confidently
  • You stop performing and start living authentically

This isn’t about blowing up your whole life. It’s about small shifts, what I call micro-moments of alignment, that help you reconnect to what truly matters.

You don’t need to flip your whole life upside down to live authentically. Instead, create what I call micro moments of alignment.

  • If you value growth, carve out 10 minutes to read each morning.
  • If you value peace, turn off all of the notifications on your phone every night.
  • If you value impact, volunteer once a month or mentor a new teammate.

Try making a big difference through just tiny little shifts. Gain momentum. Feel more like you. When you’re clear on your values, authenticity becomes natural.

So go ahead, hit pause. Download the worksheet. Do the work.
