When my grandson puts on his superhero costumes – Spider-Man, Batman, Captain America – something magical happens. He doesn’t just pretend to be a superhero… he becomes one. He stands taller, his voice deepens, and his confidence soars.
And it makes me wonder: When did we stop doing that?
When did we tuck away our own brilliance, our cape gathering dust in the closet?
The truth is, most people are walking through life without their full spark. Only 30% can name their superpowers, and just 20% are using them every day. But when we do, the results are staggering:
- Confidence skyrockets by 50%
- Burnout drops by 20%
- Motivation and mental health improve significantly
- Teams see 3x productivity and 600% higher engagement
So why aren’t we all living in our capes?
Three reasons:
1️⃣ We’re blind to them. Our strengths feel so natural we assume everyone can do them.
2️⃣ We have limiting beliefs. We brush off compliments, fall into comparison traps, and fear sounding boastful.
3️⃣ Our greatest strength is often also our greatest weakness, which can make us doubt its value.
How to Find Yours
I use a 2-step Spark Scan:
- Self-Reflection: Ask yourself: What am I often thanked for? What feels easy for me but impresses others? What energizes me? What would I do for free? Write everything down.
- Ask the Experts: Ask people who know you: “Please describe a time when you saw me at my best.” Listen, take notes, and look for patterns.
Your superpowers aren’t hiding, they’re woven through your life, your feedback, your impact. You just need to name them.
Once you do, you’ll want to use them more. You’ll model possibility for others. You might even lend your strength to someone who needs it, because that’s what superheroes do.
